Act On Protection From The Harmful Impact Of The Chemical Substances And Mixtures ( SG, issue 10/2000, in force from 04.02.2002) regulates the conditions and the order for producing, launching at the market, using, storing and exporting chemical substances on their own or in mixtures or in articles and mixtures, with objective of protection of the health and protection of the environment, and sets powers of state authorities, implementing control over the production, launching at the market, use, storage and export of chemical substances on their own, in mixtures or in articles and mixtures.

The provisions of the Council Directive 67/548/EEC of 27 June 1967 on the approximation of laws, regulations and administrative provisions relating to the classification, packaging and labeling of dangerous substances have been introduced in the Bulgarian legislation with Act On Protection From The Harmful Impact Of The Chemical Substances And Mixtures and the Ordinance on classification, packaging and labeling of existing and new chemical substances and preparations. They apply to all persons who place chemicals and mixtures on the market.

Based on their properties, dangerous substances and mixtures are classified in at least one of certain hazard categories.

It is important to note that hazardous chemicals and mixtures, as well as mixtures that are not classified as hazardous but may pose

a specific hazard when placed on the market for professional use, must be accompanied by a safety data sheet, which contains detailed information on the relevant hazardous chemical or mixture for the protection of human health and the environment at work. The safety data sheet shall be provided by the person who places the chemical or mixture on the market before or during the first delivery. The safety data sheet shall specify the conditions for storage of chemicals and mixtures.
